After letting the power of Hospital Radio go to my head, I felt I needed
a bigger challenge - so why not just go for the top - so from then on
the BBC received 100 million letters from me a week! Everything from
appearing on Going Live as a caller to helping out file records at the
BBC in Belfast.
Then the big break (well it all went down hill after this! Only joking!)
at the age of 15 I was approached by Mike Edgar (now an Executive
Producer for BBC Northern Ireland) to present a national programme for
BBC Radio 5 (well it was a long time ago). The programme went on
air in September 1991 and from then I was offered more work with the BBC
when I wasn't at school. From leaving school to 1993 I worked as a
general helper outer for BBC Northern Ireland television, while being a
Radio Production Assistant (trainee) on the Sony Award winning programme
'Just Jones', presented by George Jones and me old pal 'Sadie' - bless
her!
In 1993 I finally left the Emerald Isle for the sunny climes of
Cyprus. I was one of the main presenters for the newly formed
radio station Radio Napa (now Napa FM), from there I was approached by
the national station Radio 1FM to present their Breakfast Show, and from
that got some work with BFBS (Oooooh those were the days!) After a short
stint on the Island I soon got sick of all the lovely sunshine (NOT!) I
worked as a slave on a cruise ship, only to return home to Northern
Ireland, the land I know so well!
THE EARLY DAYS (BUT NO SO VERY THIS TIME!)
After returning home for a short time I got itchy feet again! This time off
to the bright lights and smog of Olde London town! Trying to sell my
body wasn't working very well so I thought I may as well go back to the
bosoms of the BBC. This time I went into work for BBC News in the News
Information Department (not very exciting, I know, but need must!) I got
bored with all that, so I got accepted to work for the ultimate station
in the UK 1FM (BBC Radio One, to those in the know) With Radio 1 I got
to be on of the girls in the typing pool (in other words I was a Radio
Production Assistant again!) much fun to be had at the Big 1FM! I got to
work with Lynn Parsons, Nicky Campbell, Steve Wright and many more of
the top DJ's at the time! From my temporary position at Radio 1 I moved
on to the bright lights of TV with Children's BBC. I worked as the
letter opener and general dogs body in the CBBC office, every day I left
Television Centre with more glitter on me than a big glittery thing!
From CBBC to the BBC World Service where I pretended to be a Studio
Manager, as an SM I managed to transfer 600 hours of Arabic music (if
you can call it that??) onto CD for the new Jukebox system
TIME FOR A CHANGE, ME THINKS!
Whilst at the World Service I got the opportunity to present for a new
temporary radio station in London. Freedom FM was to be one of the
contenders for the new London License (didn't quite happen) with them I
presented the Breakfast Show with the very outrageous Trolley Dolly!
At this stage a new radio station was about to be launched in the mother
land, so back to Ireland I trotted. My experience with Radio 1521
was a mixed one for various reasons......ok then I hated it! But while
in Northern Ireland I got to present for ITV Night-time, a little
programme called Flux! (what a scary experience that was!) I also got to
report for BBC Radio 5 Live on the Belfast Pride march (well 15 people
running round making a lot of noise!)
After discovering I missed the bright lights and my showbiz life in
London, I had to return. Back to BBC Television Centre where I
worked for the Production Panel, with the panel I was a Production
Secretary (no not the type with a skirt and lipstick) and experienced
many different programmes from Chucklevision to This Life (what
variety!). But I knew I wanted to return to my first love - Radio
1 and in 1998 I did just that. My mentor Fergus Dudley guided me
through the minefield that was the new Radio 1, I worked on Drive Time
with Dave Pearce and also the Radio 1 Breakfast Show with Kevin Greening
(much respect!) and Zoë Ball.
Whilst at Radio 1 and later Radio 2 as a BA, I decided I needed to let
rip on the public once again. Liberty Radio was my home at the
weekends and I really enjoyed my little late night programme; which,
even if I say so myself, was quite ground breaking. Broadcasting from
1-4am I managed to carry out a large scale Outside Broadcast from one of
London's biggest clubs - The Astoria. It was an experience I
thoroughly enjoyed, more so, because the live act on stage that night
was the one and only Boney M! (How cool??)
After fully moving into the world of Freelance and a short stint
presenting and producing for Inflight Productions, I got the opportunity
to work with one of my favourite presenters and close friend Lynn
Parsons and Katrina (Formally from The Waves & all round wild girl!)
on BBC Radio 2. Not only that, I continued to work for Radio 1 and
Produced programmes by Clive Warren (the one and only overnight success
& someone who I remain great mates with today!), Jamie Theakston and
Vicky Marsden who has been there when I needed her most (I.E around 2am
- You just have to love her!)
Whilst doing all that I was the Breakfast Show Presenter on Thames Radio
and then onto Mid-morning and Drive for Fusion in London. (Is your
head spinning yet?)
At the moment I continue to work for BBC Radio 1, Wise Buddah, Something
Else Productions and on the odd occasion the mighty Westwood with
Justice Productions, on a Freelance basis....................more
recently I've been back on the air with The Sun & News Of The World
Live, working with the lovely Neale James and Bruno Brookes at BBME, and
may I add enjoying it VERY MUCH!
As I'm sure you can tell I think I like working in the broadcasting
industry and am willing to give anything a go at least once (within
reason of course!)
I hope this hasn't been too much for you? But if you want to be a part
of it all you have to do is get in touch!
